Some projects come together so beautifully they seem to echo the spirit of an era. In 2023, I had the pleasure of designing, supplying, and installing a bespoke shelving system for Charlie Langdell, whose brief combined clarity of purpose with a real eye for visual harmony. The final result? A stunning example of the “vinyl days” aesthetic—an interior trend that fuses mid-century nostalgia with crisp modern lines.
The project grew out of Charlie’s love for curated display: books, plants, framed prints, and most of all, objects with personality. The vibe was clear—something timeless, fresh, and elegant, with a nod to the past. That’s where the vinyl days trend came in, and it became the conceptual heart of the design.

Key Features
Charlie’s shelving spans 2.2 metres across a key wall in their flat, with five levels of display space. We opted for twin slot uprights and brackets—refined and unfussy—paired with crisp white melamine boards to give a clean backdrop that let the objects take centre stage.
One unique detail was the differentiated shelf depth. The lowest shelf, intended for chunkier items, was significantly deeper. Above that, the four remaining shelves were custom-cut to 28cm deep—just enough to hold books and larger ornaments without protruding awkwardly into the room.
These deeper upper shelves weren’t just a practical choice—they were an aesthetic one too. In many vinyl days-inspired interiors, balance and rhythm are everything. Deeper shelves anchor the structure visually while offering generous display space. Every shelf was fully adjustable, mounted on carefully positioned twin slot verticals for maximum flexibility and minimal visual interruption.
Expert Tips
Charlie had a clear vision from the outset: sleek, wide shelves with a sense of space between the uprights, and as little visible hardware as possible. This led to several clever adjustments:
- We minimised visible tracking by cutting verticals to length on-site and stopping just below the lowest shelf and just above the highest one. This made the wall feel more architectural, less mechanical.
- The shelf spacing was left deliberately flexible. We used longer verticals than strictly necessary to allow Charlie to adjust shelf heights later depending on changing needs—whether that meant tall books, lush trailing plants, or perhaps even framed vinyl covers (a perfect touch for any true vinyl days fan).
- A simple white-on-white palette was chosen to complement Charlie’s existing teak dining table and black chairs. While a black/teak combo was discussed (and would’ve been beautifully on-trend), the final decision was to keep things light and gallery-like.
The interplay of white shelves, generous spacing, and carefully chosen contents has since created a serene, flexible zone for creativity and reflection. As I noted in my recent piece on aesthetic trends in twin slot shelving, this kind of tailored restraint is key to the vinyl days look—nostalgia without clutter, utility without compromise.

Need to Have…
To recreate a similar look in your own space, you’ll need:
- Twin slot uprights, carefully planned to avoid crowding.
- Matching brackets and white melamine boards (we use high-quality moisture-resistant MDF rather than standard chipboard).
- A wall with at least 2.2m of uninterrupted space.
- A mix of plants, books, and design objects—ideally with vintage flair or personal history—to bring the vinyl days aesthetic to life.
