Twin-Slot Shelving for Space Enthusiast – David’s Home Office with Desk and Display

When David contacted me in early 2023, he was looking to transform his upstairs home office in Epping, Essex. Like many of us, his working-from-home setup had evolved organically, with stacks of books on the floor and a growing need for more structure. But David had a vision that went beyond tidying up. A lifelong enthusiast of space exploration, he wanted a workspace that would also function as a personal gallery — somewhere to display his extensive collection of books, models, and memorabilia related to lunar missions and interstellar travel.

The solution we developed was a custom twin-slot shelving system with an integrated desk, using Elfa’s Sparring range. The result is a space that feels calm, intelligent, and completely personal — practical for day-to-day work but also expressive of the passions that matter most.

Designing for Function and Passion

David initially reached out after seeing the Elfa system in use in his wife’s studio. Her setup had been installed on a solid brick wall, while David’s office wall was studwork, so his first question was about weight-bearing. The good news is that Elfa’s Sparring system can be fitted safely and securely to stud walls with the right fixings — something we’ve done successfully in many home offices, bedrooms, and libraries.

From our initial emails and calls, it became clear that David had a few key priorities:

  • A proper desk area for his laptop and desktop PC
  • Adjustable bookshelves strong enough for his reference library
  • A place to proudly display his space-themed collectables
  • A clean, modular look that wouldn’t overwhelm the room

He also had a keen eye for detail — tweaking shelf heights, depths, and layouts to ensure everything worked both practically and aesthetically. For instance, we reduced the desk depth from 650mm to 600mm for better chair clearance, and we planned the vertical bracket placement carefully around the room’s light switch and door frame.

Twin-Slot Shelving: A System That Evolves

One of the standout features of this installation is the combination of desk and display within a single wall system. Using Elfa’s Sparring uprights and brackets, we built a floating desk along one wall, paired with open shelving above and to the sides. The desk is constructed from a moisture-resistant white melamine-faced MDF board with matching edge-banding — practical, easy to clean, and light-reflective. Below it, David requested a low-level shelf to make use of the dead space just above the floor — perfect for housing boxes, storage baskets, or even a footrest.

Above the desk, we installed three shelves at carefully spaced intervals to hold books, framed prints, and select models from David’s collection. As someone deeply immersed in the history of space travel, David has amassed a unique set of artefacts, and it was important that these didn’t feel crammed together. The openness of the twin-slot system allows for breathing space — each object can sit proudly without competing for attention.

Referencing the Twin-Slot Revival

As noted in our earlier report Retro Revival: Twin-Slot Shelving in the Design Community, systems like Elfa’s are experiencing a real resurgence. Once confined to utility rooms or school cloakrooms, they’re now a staple of modern interior design — prized for their flexibility, clean lines, and visual order.

In David’s case, the Elfa Sparring range provided just the right balance. The verticals recede into the background visually, while the melamine shelves and desk surface add structure and brightness. The end result isn’t heavy or cluttered — it’s composed and functional, with a nod to mid-century modular systems like Vitsoe, but infused with a far more personal energy.

Built for Exploration

The theme of space exploration guided many of our decisions. Just as a well-designed spacecraft relies on modular systems, clear workflows, and efficient use of space, so too does a good home office. David’s shelving layout reflects this. Everything has its place — whether it’s a technical reference book, a model of the Saturn V rocket, or a signed photo of an astronaut.

The white finish of the system complements the futuristic feel, while also keeping the room bright and visually light. Because the Elfa brackets and shelves are fully adjustable, David can reconfigure the layout over time — adding a new shelf for display, raising one to accommodate a taller book, or removing one entirely to create breathing space. That adaptability is one of the hallmarks of Elfa twin-slot shelving.

Installed for the Long Term

This wasn’t a short-term fix or a quick flat-pack upgrade. The full design, supply, and installation came in at just under £1,800, representing a real investment in both productivity and quality of life. More importantly, it’s a system that can evolve with David. As his collection grows — or if his computing setup changes — the structure will support, not constrain, those shifts.

We also made sure the wall fixings were robust enough for peace of mind. Even on a stud wall, with the correct approach and bracing, Elfa’s system is perfectly safe for holding heavy books and display items. We use high-quality metal anchors and carefully plan the verticals to coincide with stud positions where possible.

A Thoughtful Working Space

Now complete, David’s office is a calm and curated space that supports both focus and creativity. The desk and display system works as a backdrop for Zoom calls, a functional workstation, and a personal museum — all in one. It reflects the best of what twin-slot shelving can offer: adjustability, elegance, and the ability to showcase what matters most to you.

If you’re looking to create a workspace that reflects your passions — whether you’re into books, models, or something entirely your own — consider Elfa’s Sparring system. With careful design and a little imagination, it can transform even the simplest of rooms into something unique, lasting, and deeply satisfying.
