The Elfa melamine shelf W90D30 White is marketed as a versatile storage option, particularly suitable for bookshelves and other general storage needs. With its 90cm width and 30cm depth, this shelf is compatible with Elfa’s solid shelf brackets, making it a straightforward addition to an existing system. However, for my bespoke designs, I tend to steer away from Elfa’s melamine shelves in favour of superior alternatives.
Why Elfa Melamine Shelves Fall Short
Elfa’s melamine shelves are constructed from 16mm chipboard with a melamine finish, a material that is highly susceptible to chipping and damage. Additionally, the lack of moisture resistance limits its application—these shelves cannot support heavy or water-sensitive items like houseplants without risking damage.
In my experience, this limits their appeal in real-world use cases, especially for clients who prioritise durability and flexibility.
My Go-To Solution: Bespoke Shelving
For all my projects, I rely on 18mm white-faced and edged moisture-resistant MDF shelves. These bespoke alternatives not only offer superior durability but also open up a world of design possibilities. Clients can choose from a range of finishes, including natural wood tones, pressed metals, or even custom colours. This approach allows us to create storage systems that are both functional and visually stunning, free from the constraints of Elfa’s standard offerings.
