Designing a Custom Elfa Wardrobe for Guest Rooms: First Pass Solution

When designing a guest room wardrobe, space constraints and functionality are often at odds. With Elfa’s modular storage systems, however, it’s possible to create a bespoke solution that maximises storage while overcoming design challenges. In this project, I tackled sliding door clearance issues and explored both practical and aesthetic options to suit a guest room layout. Watch the full walkthrough below for a detailed look at the design process.

Sliding Door Configurations

Sliding doors are a popular choice for wardrobes in compact spaces, but they come with unique challenges. In this project, I explored:

  • Three-Door and Four-Door Solutions:
    • The four-door option allows full access to gliding components like baskets and shoe racks.
    • The three-door setup is more cost-effective but limits access to the middle section unless static shelves are used instead of moving parts.
  • Door Clearance Adjustments:
    • Positioning Elfa gliding components at the extreme left and right of the wardrobe to avoid door interference.
    • Exploring creative ideas, like angling hanging rails, to maximise shoulder clearance for garments such as suits.

Storage Options with Elfa

Elfa’s modular system allows for a high degree of customisation to meet both practical and aesthetic goals:

  1. Versatile Components:
    • Gliding baskets, hanging rails, and wire shelves provide efficient storage for everything from clothes to accessories.
    • Decor enhancements, like solid shelves and baskets, add a touch of elegance for open wardrobe designs.
  2. Static Shelving Options:
    • For tighter budgets, static shelves and hanging rails offer a cost-effective solution without compromising on storage capacity.
  3. Open vs Covered Wardrobe Solutions:
    • Sliding doors are ideal for those who want concealed storage.
    • Curtains or completely open layouts provide a more affordable and visually striking alternative, especially with Elfa’s Decor range.

Cost and Practicality

One of the key decisions in this project was balancing cost and functionality:

  • Sliding doors add convenience but require precise design to avoid interference with gliding components.
  • Open layouts or curtains significantly reduce costs while offering a stylish alternative.
  • Adding Decor elements, such as solid shelves and baskets, increases costs by approximately 25-30%, but provides a polished look for open designs.
